About Magister Operis

Co-engineering complex transactions to a clean close.

What Magister Operis is

Magister Operis is a co-engineering firm. Founded by William Kemper in 1986 as a structural framing operation in metropolitan Atlanta, the firm has grown into a cross-discipline practice that helps coachable principals — sellers, buyers, funders, brokers, and project owners — bring complex transactions to a clean close. The work spans commodities, financial instruments, real estate, and the underlying due-diligence and document craft that hold those moving parts together.

Where the name comes from

The name is Latin: magister operis, "master of the works." For centuries it described the senior figure on a great-house or cathedral project — the person who carried both jobsite knowledge and design judgment, and who synchronized the architect, the trades, and the owner's intent so that the building actually came in.

The traditional magister operis usually held first-hand mastery of the work itself, acquired across many years as a master carpenter or master mason. He sometimes filled the role of architect; more often he worked hand in hand with one. He understood that you cannot reliably draw what you cannot build, and that you cannot reliably build what was poorly drawn — that the two disciplines feed each other.

The same posture sits behind the firm today. Bringing a transaction to closing is itself a construction project; the difference is that the components are contracts, capital, and counterparties instead of stone and timber. The discipline that delivered the building is the discipline that delivers the deal.

What Magister Operis is not

Magister Operis is not here to replace architects, engineers, or builders. The firm takes over where those professions typically leave off — at the seam between excellent design, sound engineering, competent construction, and the institutional, contractual, and capital structures that determine whether a project actually closes and operates well. True efficiency begins inside the art of master building, which is the definition of architecture itself.

The firm is likewise not a substitute for licensed counsel, licensed broker-dealers, licensed real-estate professionals, or licensed bankers. It works alongside them, in the role that those professions historically lacked: the master of the work itself.

A note on integrity

Capital is necessary; it is not sufficient. History has repeatedly proven that money alone does not solve some people's problems — particularly the problem of finding parties who actually deliver what they have committed to deliver. The firm's posture across every engagement is to bring integrity to the seam where capital meets execution. That posture is sold as a service of its own. See Integrity as a Service.
