Double Donut Architecture

Location: Stone Mountain area of State of Georgia, USA

Architect: Southern Classic Design

General Contractor: Magbee Custom Homes

Back Story: Bill Kemper was approached by Chuck Magbee asking if Bill knew how to construct the "double donut" that is part of the front entrance of this contemporary residence. Three truss companies that Chuck had inquired with had no idea how to construct such a unique feature.  Corinthian Concurrent and Wm. C. Kemper Consulting provided the unique foyer radius ceiling components, the exterior double donut structure, and the porte cochere to the project.  Wm. C. Kemper Consulting coordinated its ideas with the structural engineer who specified the plywood and screwing specifications for the structural radius components that facilitated Wm. C. Kemper's production drawings.

Special Features:
  • Front entrance consisting of double tiered 3 foot wide x 3 inch thick laminated radius components spanning over twenty-two feet.
  • Barrel ceiling over entry is engineered to accommodate the weight of the roof bearing down from above.
  • All radius members were precision machine cut by a one-of-a-kind HERBBILL Technologies fabrication fixture/ No jigsaws were used.
  • Concurrent design engineering and decimal-inch accurate 3-D production drawings provided by Wm. C. Kemper Consulting.

Special recognition:

Christopher Keibler: Mr. Keibler directed the installation of the components manufactured by Mr. Senn.

Mark A. Senn: Mr. Senn accurately prefabricated 95% of all the components off-site based on Wm. C. Kemper production drawings.
