English Country I

Location: Buckhead area of Atlanta, GA

Designer: Hayes M. Philips (retired)

General Contractor: Philmac, Inc. (retired)

Back Story: This is a very unique project. Every wall in the house... other than the interior basement walls are structural insulated panels (SIPS) making for a very durable and quiet house. Corinthian Concurrent and Wm. C. Kemper Consulting did many things that were new and unique within the local building industry.

Special Features:
  • All walls except the basement interior were structural insulated panels (stress-skin panels).
  • Roof structure is all wood-I, laminated veneer lumber, & parallel-strand lumber engineered roof components.
  • Interior heart-pine timberwork with authentic mortise and tendon joinery.
  • Exterior porches, loggia, and gazebo are oak timberwork with authentic mortise and tendon joinery.
  • HERBBILL Technologies designed and manufactured a one-of-a-kind fixture to cut the custom mechanical chases into the structural insulated panels. HERBBILL Technologies also designed and manufactured specialty machinery for the cutting of the highly accurate seventeen foot radiuses into the up to 8"x23" oak timber. No stationary or hand operated band saws were used.
  • Decimal-inch accurate 3-D production drawings provided to Corinthian ConcurrentTM in all structural areas excluding the foundation by Wm. C. Kemper Consulting.
Special recognition:

Hayes M. Philips: Residential designer (retired) for numerous relaxed but sophisticated designs. For years, Mrs. Philips' designs gave warm and upscale designs to Buckhead's elite.

Charles W. Philips: Mr. Philips, owner of Philmac Inc. (retired), gave this homeowner a high-performance and highly appealing residence. The completed project is super quiet and highly insulated, as well as wind and fire resistant. Mr. Philips knack for coaxing the subcontractors into making the project look "timeless", shows up in all areas and compliments his wife's reputation for creating both playful and graceful designs.

Will Goodman: As the landscape architect, Mr. Goodman's exterior landscape design takes full advantage of the privacy afforded by the building site that was hidden from the road. You are stunned, when driving up the driveway, as you come into view with the house. The layout, the outdoor structures, and the terracing makes one wonder if him/herself is in a storybook park. One is tempted to say it's "perfect".

Christopher Keibler: Mr. Keiber was Corinthian Concurrent's production engineer. Mr. Keibler skillfully executed his highly-trained x, y, and z layout skills to the overall project while systematically assembling the teamwork of assembling the accurate components manufactured by Mr. Senn.

Mark A. Senn: Mr. Senn was Corinthian Concurrent's component engineer. Mr. Senn very carefully customized all the structural insulated panels and components for installation as well as leading the timber-framing production and installation processes. Mr. Senn carefully executed the Wm. C. Kemper supplied 3-D production drawings (based on Mr. Keibler's highly-skillful as-built documentation) and then analyzed the highly out of square oak timber we received to reach a happy medium resulting in relaxed, but elegant timberwork for the exterior porches, gazebo, and loggia.

Herbert E. Hess: Mr. Hess's various fixtures and machinery creations provided precision and time-saving solutions for the structural insulated panels as well as processing the massive timbers utilized on the project.
